I want an indoor swing and a road trip for my birthday, I said a couple days before the 15th. Thinking a new handbag, a concert, and the Vegas heat would be the perfect way to celebrate the BIG two-nine.
But God had other plans.
We got the news Dallin’s 96 year old grandfather had passed away and that the funeral would be the day after my birthday. Without hesitation I packed my family and told my husband we were ALL going with, and we could celebrate my day along the way.
Little did I know I was about to experience the road trip of a lifetime!
overalls (bp section nordstrom) / thermal (abercrombie) / shoreline converse (nordstrom) / backpack, neck pillows, luggage, leash (skip hop) / hollands adidas (nordstrom) , top (jcrew factory) / britons freshly picked (nordstom) / brooklys outfit (target)
I pulled the kids from school and we hit the road.
First stop, Glacier National Park. Everyones first time. I loved it. We stayed at the Many Glacier Hotel in the family suit. In the morning we took a boat around the lake. Part of the boat trip included a scenic hike to another lake and scenic boat tour around a beautiful mountain lake. We saw a moose, it snowed flurried and it was so-o fun.
The moment we decided we were all going to Canada we called the Fairmont (the castle) in Banff, Canada and put our names on a waiting list to get a room during our stay. After our hike we got the call that we got a room! I was so excited and we packed as fast as we could and drove to Banff, Canada. We checked in, swam all night and ate the birthday desert the concierge surprised me with.
I woke up in a castle, next to the love of my life. Surprisingly, the children all slept through the night. It was snowing and made the mountains surrounding the castle feel even more magical. We had the early morning and room to ourselves while the kids slept in for once. They must have been so worn out from all of the swimming, hiking, shopping, eating & traveling! It was a birthday miracle. Once the children woke up, we headed straight to the Gold Club lounge for an amazing Buffet Breakfast.
From Banff, we headed over to Lake Louise. Once we arrived, we parked the car and walked a short distance towards the lake. As we came around the bend in the path, we were greeted with the most surreal view. I couldn’t take my eyes of the beautiful lake and glacier. I was grateful that even as I ate my birthday dinner, I still didn’t have to take my eyes off the view, as our restaurant had huge windows overlooking all of Lake Louise and the mountains.
We are already planning on coming back here in the winter. We are going to ice skate on the lake, take horse drawn carriage rides around it and sled. I am so excited to come back.
“some people are worth traveling for” (see post here) the blog title from a couple years ago in reference to Dallins grandparents, unbenonce to us that would be that last time visiting grandpa. We honored a great life and our kids great grandfather (obituary) He came to Canada from Russia as an infant in a potato sack, with no money and little education he built from scratch with his brother a very successful Trucking Company. He’s the man that told Dallin’s dad to keep his daughter Debra “in the same fashion as which she has become accustomed”, which drove Dallin’s dad to his own successes. I only met him 3 times, but he was a wonderful person.

BIG SKY MONTANA
Yellowstone….just how I remembered, but better. It was my husband and childrens first time here. Loved experiencing the “Jurassic Park” of National Parks with them. Bison were crossing the road, we saw herds of elk and Old Faithful was incredible.
I can’t believe all we fit in in such a short amount of time. The secret to this trip was to play hard all day and drive at night. Wake up and have wonderful “full” days everyday.
